This is a great recording of Tom Killen playing an old Sho Bud Pro II. I believe Ricky Davis worked on this steel for Tom. The audio and playing are simply outstanding.
This is one of the sweetist-sounding Sho-Bud recordings I think I've ever heard. Just awesome. (Note: Use headphones for maximum Sho-Bud sweetness!)

Yes here it was when I finished it for Tom....
Yes indeed it sounds completely freakin awesome....no other steel guitar sounds as good as a old barrel tuning Pro-II...Period!!!

| I have watched this video a few times. Tom sounds great and playing behind Vince must be a thrill. Everyone in this band can play very well. I like the bass guitar, just straight and solid. |

Ricky,
Did you shave the pedals down on the sides for Tom or where they like this when you originally took it in for refurb?
Do you remember how these felt compared to the full-size ones like on your LDG? Any difference at all?

Hey Don; they were already shaved down when I got it to refurb.
I don't find much diff of the wide waffles and the slightly shaved ones. I play in my socks...

I wanted to also mention that Tom is using an old Sho-Bud volume pedal and Peavey Session 400.
I love all the modern stuff, but the old battle-worn gear still stands up after all these years. It still works! Right Ricky? |

Here I am cutting/playing 1973 LDG...1970 ShoBud volume pedal; through '69 Blackface Twin with 1970 JBL K-130.

Sounds great Ricky! I love the fact the steel is really prominent in the mix. With some songs, the steel is buried so far in the background you can hardly hear it. Good thing the producer on this album is a steel player!
I'd have to rank that recording as one of the best Sho-Bud projects I've heard. Great work!
Now, I have to go practice my Lloyd Green slants!

| A question for you old hands on Sho-Bud sound: can the tone that Jimmy Day had on the early Ray Price stuff (Crazy Arms; Heart Over Mind; Wasted Words etc) be considered a good representation of the Sho-Bud tone? I love that tone. Is that a Sho-Bud PU and, what would a modern day Pu be that replicates that tone the best? |

Bobby; that tone Jimmy Day had on that very early stuff was played on a Sho~bud Permanent pedal steel....and that is way different changer fingers and mounting and rollers/keyhead; than even the mid-60's steel(fingertip) and even more diff. than the early '70's Sho~bud like Tom Killen is playing. Tom's pickups are original single coil ShoBud pickups...and closest single coil modern made replacement is a TrueTone made my Jerry Wallace wound to 17,500 ohms. It's very hard to reproduce the sound on one style Sho~bud to the next style Sho~bud...they all had different voices.
