Here is the band Kanis & Lou playing the song South Sea Island Magic. The steel arrangement is inspired by Basil Henriques beautiful version.
The steel guitar is a Rickenbacker SW 8, with a great stand made by deluxe34

The steel is maybe a bit low in the mix but the voice deserved to be highlighted... it's my girlfriend who's singing Smile

Love it too...great steel playing, and the vocals are nice (the French accent/minor mispronunciations are completely forgiveable)!

This is the version of the song I was previously acquainted with:

Hey, if I was in France, I'd be maneuvering to get into your band as a bassist, at least! Wink

Very nice. All of it. Tambourine played with brushes is remarkably effective, and yes, great job on the vocal. That's you on steel, Paolo? Tasteful understated accompaniment.

Thank you guys! Your comment are much appreciated.

Nic, thank you for the link, great material there!

James, yes that's my steel, I bought it from a Parisian friend a few months ago. It was my first Rickenbacker, and wow I like so much the sound coming from this instrument.

We'll post more in the very next weeks.
Thanks again!

That's beautiful Paolo. Perfect balance of sound with lovely steel, vocals, bass and brushes.
Is your volume pedal reverse acting? I have often wondered about trying that to see if it feels more natural.
Jerry Byrd used a reverse acting pedal (and also his left foot).
Love to hear more when you post them, thanks again Paolo and the rest of your band.

Daryl, Bill, Jim and Andrea, thank you for your kind words.

Jim, my volume pedal is a Ernie Ball, normal acting.
It seems to be a long trip before mastering the way you blend right hand action and pedal action to control the volume.

Hi Paolo...just curious, what tuning are you using in this? And Basil's version that you mention, is that online anywhere? I'd like to start tinkering around with it myself, its a great song.

Hi Nic,
I am using C6th tuning with a high G and the low A tuned up to Bb.
You can find the song as a part of a live Basil published a few years ago I think:

Send him a message and he will tell you more.

After tinkering around with it, I can understand why that high fifth string is so useful on this tune. Maybe someday I'll give up low C!

Another version I happened on recently, from Hawaii Calls:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vkZFlXRMlY

Not sure if its Jules Ah See or someone else (recorded in '59) but I picked up a vinyl copy on eBay for fairly cheap, maybe the liner notes will clarify once it arrives.
