Just bought my tickets to see David Bromberg and Jerry Douglas in Albany on December 9th. Both playing solo. I've seen Jerry play with his band and with Allison Krause, but never solo. Can't wait.

I saw Jerry with Peter Rowan, performing as a duo. Quite a few years ago. A truly memorable show. I'd go see him again, anytime.

I recently saw the Jerry Douglas Band at Slim's in San Francisco - they put on a killer show.

And by the way, the Grammy nominations came out yesterday and Jerry's newest album, What If is nominated in the category of Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. I think this is great - Jerry's 14 Grammys have all been pretty much in the categories of Bluegrass and Country. A lot of the tunes on the new album have taken the dobro (and some lap steel) "downtown."

I'd love to see this Bromberg/Douglas show.

I have been bugging JD over the past few years to come out to Northern California and do one of these solo shows - it hasn't happened yet. At the same SF club in either 1999 or 2000 he did a show with the late great singer/songwriter Jesse Winchester. Jerry played solo for several songs, then Jesse did the same. In the next set they played together. Douglas had recently produced and played on Winchester's album, Gentleman of Leisure.

That's the closest thing I've seen to a Jerry Douglas solo show aside from his solo portion he does in the middle of Alison Krauss & Union Station concert.

I recall getting a kick out of Jerry and Jesse that evening - they told the audience they were excited to have rented a Cadillac convertible at the airport for their California tour and being able to see the sights with the top down.

Howard has gotten a lot of mileage over the years out of that photo. Wink
