Topic: Need a lighter guitar or case |

| I'm just starting to take pedal steel lessons. I purchased a Wilcox single neck with pad off Steel Guitar Forum. Together with the case this weighs in the neighborhood of 70 pounds and is hard for me to handle. I really need something lighter, as I'm 81 years old and not as strong as I once was. I've thought about split case(s), or perhaps buying a stage one starter guitar if I can find something in the $1000.00 range. Any thoughts on this dilemma? |

A single 10 at 70 lbs sounds really wrong. Get a set of double cases, works every time.

| I was really surprised at the weight...seems too heavy for a single neck. Where can I find a case for the guitar. I'm kind of new to steel guitar. A couple of years ago I bought an 8 string laptop and kind of fell in love with the steel guitar. As a kind of newbie I'm not familiar with places to buy things like cases, etc. Most music stores in my area (Ohio) don't cater to steel players. |

There are a couple of people on the forum that custom build cases, and 2 piece cases. I don't remember either but one is in Buffalo NY area and the other is in North or South Carolina. Its not something you can go into a music store and buy or order.
I'll be 80 this month and split my steel into two cases about 6 or 7 years ago.

| I just weighed the case and the guitar. The guitar weighs 36 lbs and the case weighs about 27. I guess I overestimated the total weight, but still I think split cases would be the better way to go. Thanks for the replies. |

| Yikes! That sounds right for the guitar. A good case should weigh in around 15 pounds. Split cases will help tremendously. Steve Hinson makes some nice fiber board split cases that will really lighten your load. I got a keyboard gig bag and used high density foam all around. The guitar goes in there, legs and rods in a separate gun bag. Works well and the back thanks me for it. |

Big recommendation here for Steve Hinson's 'X' Brand cases. They'll cut that weight way down.

I've got a soft gun case for the detachables and an order in with Steve Hinson for a Brand X case for the body.

I did the quick-and-dirty fix.Got a gigbag for a 49 key electronic keyboard from Sweetwater for IIRC about $50;the pedal rack and leg bag fit easily
. 70 pounds in one hand is very hard to balance,but you'd be surprised at how much the pedal rack and loaded leg bag weigh,and how having that weight out of the main case evens things out.Unless you've got back problems,carrying 70 pounds is fairly do-able if it's divided between both hands......I do have to admit 70 pounds is pretty heavy for an SD-10;my MSA Classic D-10 8P4K is 87 pounds in the case,and it's stayed home for close to 20 years! |

I'm with Dave Hopping. Don't forget the weight of the original hard case. The one for my Carter is 25 pounds empty.
My poor-man's split cases, two 49 key bags, the guitar body is in 2" foam. About 22 pounds each. Fine for local gigs and practice.
