This guitar is for sale in the Toronto area:

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-guitar/city-of-toronto/1960-s-rickenbacker-jerry-byrd-steel-guitar/1317198963?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

I notice that the nameplate on the guitar being played by the lady is not on the one for sale.

Is there something special about this instrument???

Geo

The Rick Jerry Byrd model was made from 1961-70. They were available in 6, 7, 8, or 10 strings. They are somewhat rare, although not highly sought-after, as far as I can tell. If I were in the market for one I'd want an 8-string (like this one). Jerry plays one on that live TV clip where he plays "Estrellita".

Thank you kindly Doug. I don't think I ever remember seeing one like it.

Some brief comments (by Andy Volk) on the JB model Rick in an old issue of Fretboard Journal :https://www.fretboardjournal.com/columns/catch-day-1962-rickenbacker-jerry-byrd-steel-guitar/

I've been tempted when I've encountered them for sale in past. Kind of wish I hadn't passed them by. As Doug said, for some reason they never became a hot item on the vintage market. Might not appeal to everyone's visual aesthetic.

They took a few liberties with what I gave them. I did not make that terrible Byrd pun. I have my own stash of bad puns to use. Smile

I have not seen many vintage or old steel guitars, but I did see a guy playing the 8 string version of this Rickenbacker at a steel guitar convention in the North of England last August. I don't know his name but he is a friend of Basil Henriques. What I do know is the guitar sounded fantastic through a little Aer amplifier. It sort of growled at times!

Looks like the tuner pan covers are missing as well as the name badge. Did Rick do a string through body guitar? I always thought they had the combined stop bar tailpiece with bridge.
