I just received this wonderful Jerry Byrd CD. 30 tunes and a 50 page booklet with notes about the of the songs and a complete Byrd discography. Wow! Highly recommended.

Here's Peter Hund's extensive review of the CD. Every steel player should own this one. It's essential history of the instrument.

It is so weird buying great American music from... over there. There's a series going of 5 cd's in a single box, no foofaraw, just discs. I was zooming out on 80's Miles Davis, and you can't even get some of these in single cd form like "Star People" and "You're Under Arrest." So those two and "Decoy" and "Aura" and "Man with a Horn" were like, $22 including shipping - from Australia. These were the bands with John Scofield, Mike Stern and/or John McLaughlin and every great bassist Santana, Sting and the Rolling Stones could steal. "The critics" were quick to denigrate that music, like "It's not Kind of Blue!" and "it's not Bitches Brew!" Guess what, Little Bucky - neither are you.

Thanks for posting news of this release, and the reviewÒ€”I likely wouldn't have heard of either, otherwise.

Thanks Bob for posting.
Not many Byrd fans would otherwise know about this CD on offer. The quality is great, I highly recommend it to any steel player.

Unfortunately the otherwise excellent booklet contains a glaring error - it lists Byrd's C6th tuning backwards! And also says he sometimes tuned the first string to C# (instead of the bottom string). Just about every author has errors - given my own, I'm not very comfortable throwing stones - but that one's kind of a biggie, especially as this is misinformation gets perpetuated to a wider group than just steelers.

Great CD by the best non-pedal player. It was nice to be quoted accurately in that in depth review by Peter Hund.

I missed this thread the first time around, thanks David for bringing it to the top - just placed my order.

Also coming from Amazon:

Legends of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar

And the soundtrack CD to the film Get Low which starred Robert Duvall. Jerry Douglas is responsible for a good portion of the soundtrack. Found a copy for a dollar plus shipping!
