How much variation is there for the width of a pedal steel guitar (end-cap to end-cap, tuner head end to bridge end)?
Are most PSG built to the same width?
Example, how wide is a Sho-Bud PSG or an Excel?
Thanks! _________________ Tony

The crucial dimension is the scale length. The overall length varies a lot between guitars with a traditional keyhead and the various keyless types. My home-built uni 12 has a 24" scale (which is quite common) but the overall length is only 29" (see left). _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Yes, I could probably get it down to that if I build another. I left plenty of space under the hood as I wasn't sure. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Greg,
If your guitar is 27.5" wide, what's the length. |

The view from the dance floor sees only width, depth and height, with no real length. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Ole wanted to know the height of a flag pole. A little girl walked by and said: "Why don't you just lay it down and measure it"?
Ole said: "I don't want to know the length, I want to know the height"! |

The breadth of this thread grows enormous, as does the depth of ole Ole's problems. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

There is a plethora of modern guitars based on the Emmons design like Derby, Zum and others that measure app. 33 1/4 x 11 body size.
This seems to be a standard size for a lot of guitars. I don't believe there is anything being built today that is larger than that. In fact, many more modern guitars are smaller.
Then there are others like the old Sho-Buds that are longer and wider.
Williams keyless guitars are only 28 1/2 inches long while the keyed guitars are 31.
Mullen guitars guitars are 32 x 10.5.
The MCI I'm playing is app. 33 X 10 1/2. I suspect Carters are about this size, maybe even shorter.
GFI, new MSA more compact too.
I'm referencing D10's of course. Some 12 cabinets may be longer. |

This is a good question for the case builders here on the forum ...They can probably give you EXACTING measurements for quite a few different steels .... |

I recently bought a Sho-Bud 6139 and it measures 33.5". I'm all set for now. _________________ Tony
