You get a lot of rich chords from this tuning without much work. |
I completely agree. I play steel guitar with a female singer who does a lot of trad country.
I use the 11 tuning on these songs so far:
All My Ex's Live in Texas
Anytime (Your Feel Lonely)
Crazy
Lovesick Blues
Sweet Georgia Brown
Walking After Midnight

the tab looks fairly simple, but the sound produced is very full. |
You said a mouthful, Doug! Awesome tune and beautifully thought out. As Joe Pass said, "It's not about playing hard things or technical things, it's about playing music."
If B11th tuning can help you express your music and touch people with less technical effort that is certainly an advantage. For the right tune, B11th is untouchable in the richness and timbre it provides with just 6 strings. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Doug,
Do you ever play B11th on an 8 string guitar? |

Do you know the tuning Jerry Byrd used for 8 string B11th? |

Doug,
It appears that on the YouTube video of Jerry playing "Sand", he's playing it on an 8 string neck. |

Erv, I think JB evolved on his B11 tuning over the years. In his prime he played a 7-string version, as listed on John Ely's site:
E
C#
A
F#
D#
C#
B
Jerry insisted that 7 strings are necessary to get the full potential of B11. That was probably true for him because of how he played, so masterfully! But we mere mortals can make do on the 6-string version IMO. I do have some 6-string B11 tab written by Jerry, and there is no B (no root) in the tuning. It's interesting that he chose to have two C# strings (octaves) instead of a low B in his 6-string version.
That video of "Sand" is from late in his career, in Hawaii, playing his D-8 that Shot Jackson made for him. I'll bet that the additional string is a low A, like what I listed in my post above. The only question is... did he put the A on string 8 or 7? I've seen it both ways. Jerry liked low, fat chord voicings, and that low A would have given him a low B9 chord and B7 chord. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Great song (I'm new-ish, wasn't around for the original post). Awesome to see new compositions, too...given the style of music and the tremendous catalog of songs available from years ago, it seems rare that people write new tunes, but its a good thing!
B11 is my "exotic" tuning. Some Hawaiian tunes just require it. "Sand" got me hooked and its funny that I can now sort of hear it on various recordings...I mean, its only a guess but when you hear strums with that obvious high 5th, and then lots of complex and diminished chords, B11 is a good guess. I go to B11 for the Iona standards Sand and How'd Ya Do, of course, Mapuana, and also for "In A Little Hula Heaven"...at least the intro that Jules Ah See does in the Tapa Room Tapes version...haven't worked through learning the rest, and the backing chord changes, yet!
I know there is some argument in 6 string tuning on whether the first string is best as a B or C#...I've gone the B route, and my 8 string has the two low strings B and F# so you get a huge, deep root-fifth-root sound, if you want it. Had to have a custom Stringmaster nut cut to accommodate those huge strings! Anyway, B11th has a permanent lease on one of my Stringmaster necks for sure... |
