I would hold off a while until you save a couple hundred more, then consider a Melbert steel by Robert Allen, for example. I think a Rondo, Morrell, etc. would disappoint you and discourage your progress. There are lots of other options, as well.

Please search the Steel Without Pedals section for many discussions of the Morrell, Rondo, Recording King, etc. budget lap steels.

Thank you for the input. I'll consider it.

You would be supporting a builder in the US by going this route (Melbert) - and that is certainly valid. But I'm not so sure I'd agree that the quality of the super-economy (often made in China/Korea) steels will discourage your progress. The mechanics of playing will be the same, no matter what lap steel you use.

I used a 6-string Morrel for a few years - I could afford it and it got me playing when I wanted to play. Waiting on a more expensive guitar would have discouraged my progress....as there would have been no progress if there was no guitar to play. YMMV.

Heck, I started with one of these. Which is why I think, "whatever gets ya pickin'..."

I'm back on the prowl....and I have a little more saved up. Looking for 6 or 8 stringers. Found a great deal on CL but the seller didn't want to ship to Maine...oh well.
