For the most recent post of JERRY BYRD playing "Carefree" go to JERRY BYRD's Music page.

It's a really beautiful tune with lot's of expression. He manages to wring out so much feeling in this tune that it mesmerizes me completely.

Can you tell me what tuning he's using? Sad

I agree, Ray, it's a gorgeous arrangement! Scotty's list of JB Pro Arrangements, hand written by Jerry, shows the following:

Quote:
Carefree (As Recorded) C-6th /B-11th

I ordered the tab a couple of years ago and it's in C6. I asked about a B11 version and they told me that they couldn't find a B11 version. So I don't know if there ever was a B11 version. Or maybe the listing showing C6th/B11th is incorrect?

Later I bought the original sheet music on eBay and I play the song directly from there, a little more stripped down than Jerry's version, but it's easier for my old brain to comprehend!

Achingly beautiful! Probably my all-time favorite from Jerry. I tear-up whenever I hear it!
If I could ever learn to play it like that, life would be complete....

Does anyone know who wrote it?

Would anyone care to guess what 'effects' JB might have used with this recording? Judging from the sound, I don't think it could be straight into an amp without 'effects'?

JERRY told me he NEVER DID nor NEVER WOULD use any affects for his playing. The beauty of his playing could not be enhanced in any way with electronic gimmicks or gadgets.

He even warned me to NEVER allow ANYONE to plug my guitar straight into a board. He loathed just the tho't of doing so.

He did use an EBOE on one of his recordings but that was it.

Yeah, I don't hear any effects there other than maybe a little compression, possibly added at the board. Jerry recorded this late in his career, and probably played his Sho-Bud D-8 through his Twin Reverb amp.

(I should state that this indeed is an outstanding and hauntingly beautiful recording.)

To Doug, so do you think that the reverb amp was being used without the reverb function active? Any kind of reverb is definitely an 'effect.' It seems to me that there is reverb present. Maybe I am wrong.

Yes, probably some amp reverb, but I don't hear any outboard effects like delay, chorus, doubling, etc.

I am curious, what number of strings are Jerry's pro tab arrangements written out for?

Thanks,

If my memory serves me correctly they are written out in 7 string. All one need do is seek an alternate note of you don't have that bottom seventh string, eh? Sad

Akeira Saito: Easy to tell you have been inspired by JB. Smile
I like the simple clarity of the melody you bring forth along
with YOUR tone (Not the amp).
Very well done!

Yes, there is a B11 version of "Carefree", and I have it. I got it from Jerry Byrd over 20 years ago. Since Scotty's is not selling it, would it be OK to post here? I don't want to step on any toes.

UPDATE: I just searched through my collection of tablature and I found the B11 version. Scotty must have sent it to me after he sent my initial order. So there IS a B11 (and C6) version, both hand written by Jerry, and sold by Scotty.
