Oh my gosh! My first Zum was a 1988 D10. The serial number on it was 315. I wish I had gotten the same color scheme as this one back then. My guitar was a teakwood and the last person I knew that had it was Dag Wolf. I don't think he has that guitar anymore. I wish I knew who had it now. I had some single coil pickups that Bruce Zumsteg wound for me. When I was with Skaggs he liked that bright crisp tone so I took and unwound them to 16.5 and that guitar sounded the best it ever did. I don't normally like pickups wound that low but for reason they sounded great in that guitar. I wouldn't have went any lighter than 16.5 and I know some push pull Emmons guitars had pickups wound to 14.5 and sounded pretty good. I think single coils wound between 16.5 and 18.5 are about the best ohms for single coils. I guess it depends on the guitar. I didn't mean to ramble but this a beautiful guitar and probably sounds as good as it looks. |

Are those the original headstocks and tuners?Does it split with allen bolts? Does it have center pull bellcranks? _________________ Steel Guitar Services:

[quote="john widgren"]Are those the original headstocks and tuners?Does it split with allen bolts? They look like tuners that come off an old push pull. These guitars from that year have the center pull bell cranks. |

I forgot to mention that these older Zums do have split tuning with the Allen style screws. Bruce didn't put them in all of holes but one can always add. |

Just thought I'd chime in on my former guitar here;
This guitar was ordered new by myself from Bruce. I liked the black & blue theme and requested the black pin-stripes & black background logo. I'm pretty sure that this was the first ZumSteel which was ordered with pinstripes (pre inlay) as I recall my conversations back then with Bruce. I had Bruce install his own single coils wound to 17.5. The tuners were Klusen copies made by Grover. Bruce asked me if I was good with those tuners knowing that besides my ZumSteel guitars, I was a long time Emmons pp guy. The guitar had split-tuning tuned with allen screws and was 2" taller than standard as are all my guitars. It was built for me with 8 & 6, no vert. levers as I lower Bs on the E9th with front LL lever. I do this on all my guitars and always have even though my regular setup is 8&8 for many years now.
I wish I still had it. Don't know who got it but I wish them good luck and happy times with it.
Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" Olson |
