Well, with my eyes wide open, I bought this butchered up mess of a guitar through Alex Cattaneo late last year. Without his personal assistance, I would not have been able to purchase it from the gentleman that had acquired it. Alec drove over to the seller, handled the transaction for me and even arranged to pack it up and ship it to me (with no case). Of course, I paid him for his time and trouble

Here are a few "before" photos, so you can see what I was up against.
I split the cabinet and removed the old mica from the rear deck. I then gave the two halves to my friend, Bob Littleton to rout out a lap joint and install the new maple filler block, as well as install the new piece of mica.
The cabinet is now masked up and ready for reflocking.
Both end plates had an extra hole drilled to mount jacks or switches. I had my friend and Forumite Tom Vollmer, an expert machinest, install plugs he had machined with an "interference fit" into the holes he had reamed to a specific diameter. He did this by freezing the plug and heating the end plate just before inserting the plug. He then took a cleanup cut of about .006 on the face of the endplates to get them ready for polishing.

I bow to your dedication and expertise, and to Mssrs. Littleton and Vollmer for theirs as well. A worthy thing you did, adding value to the world and restoring a great instrument, no doubt. Mega-kudos to you. I thought the guitar was almost beyond saving.
BTW, tell Bob Littleton "hey Bob" for me. We were neighbors at ISGC for a few years there.

Having been witness to do the damage myself, I can say I am astonished at the dedication and skill that Lynn displayed in this endeavour. This guitar was such a mess, many here thought it was beyond repair when I posted pics on the Forum.
At the time, I thought about trying to bring it back somewhat for myself, but in retrospect, I'm happy Lynn got his hands on it. Talk about rescuing a PP from the abyss!!!
Those endplates, I mean, seriously? Wow. The whole guitar looks stunning.
Richard, the cutout hosted a sort of mixing panel, with a plethora of knobs and switches and all. The guitar had three different outputs, and I never got a note out of it. It also had a mic stand attached permanently to the pad... hence you couldn't put it in a case. |

Many thanks for the very kind words from everyone. I guess I wanted to take this project on because I felt it would be both challenging and rewarding for me (assuming I could actually restore the guitar after I had it). I figured the worst case would be that I would end up with a pile of PP parts
Aside from the issues I mentioned above, I realized that the guitar was actually in much better condition than I had thought previously and was very encouraged, once I had it in hand.

I prefer the single coil sound, so I chose to sell the 705 and replace it with a stock Emmons pickup. Dave Beaty ended up buying it to use for lab research at Telonics. They are doing great things there, so more power to him and his company

Lynn I too stand in AWE of you my brother. Your dedication to detail and true restoration just far surpasses so many things. I own a very early Emmons P/P that i purchased from Lynn, that he also set up for me. I had very specific instructions and concerns regarding the correctness of the guitar being it is a vintage instrument, and Lynn absolutely nailed it. I will own the guitar until I die. Lynn is a true master craftsmen and such a wealth of knowledge when it comes to these instruments, and that shows in every guitar he works on. A steel that Lynn sets up sounds, plays, and looks exactly the way it is supposed to. On top of that he is truly a pleasure to do business with. Lynn, This Emmons looks wonderful, Congrats on bringing this beauty back to life. Hope your doing well!
