I've just finished up over 120 wrenches to backfill inventory and decided to run a new style due to the requests I received at the shows.
These new DOUBLE Wrenches all have a 3/16" Hex Socket on one side and either a 7/64", 3mm, or 5/32"(Sho~Bud) Allen on the other. If these look like a good idea, I may do some more to cover the split tuning set screws for the various sizes.

Some of the 3/16 tuners are just a little pregnant and a 5mm works perfect on those and will also work just fine on a regular 3/16.
Thanks for the concern. It's still a good day, bad day, up and down thing. For the last several weeks it's been mostly on the bad side. But that's OK,,,I still feel that things will get better.

Now that you say that about some of the nuts, as I was broaching these the other day, I picked up a nut off the bench to check and it didn't fit. I had taken it off a rod that I had received and when I put a micrometer on it, it was .196" and not .1875". I just checked my chart and .196" is 5mm. Thought that it was kinda wierd.
Do you know who specifically uses the 5mm hex?

Mike,
I don't know if there is any kind of real consistency and sizing control from the people that make the hex. I have worked on guitars over the years that some of the tuning nuts at random are a little oversized and once in a blue moon one or two that are undersized.
I also think that sometimes, when the hole is drilled, that the size of the drill bit may cause the OD of the hex to barely expand. Also the size of the threaded rod going into the nut affects the OD of the hex.
Because of these various causes I discouvered that a 5mm socket was a handy thing to have around.

| This is a clever idea that would be even better if the diameter was a bit larger, like that "BIG" tuning wrench. Some nylon nuts are quite unwilling to move. |

I suspect Jerry Fessenden uses the slightly larger nylon tuning nuts. Don't know who else, but I had to file away a little bit off the inside of a GeorgeL wrench to get it to fit my Fessies. Worked fine on my ZumkSteel, Sho-Bud and Show Pro guitars too.
Let me know when you have the 5mm hex socket with the push-pull endplate size (is that 3/16?) Allen at the other end and I'll order one.

Ordered the 5mm broach today.
I was running nuts on a new set of rods today and did notice the swelling and subsequent tightness of the wrench on them.
I'm thinking of marking the 5mm wrenches with an annular groove around the shaft to easily distinguish it from the 3/16" wrench.
Whaddaya think?
It's the little things like this that you guys tell me about that creates solutions.
Per, Carl Williams makes a "BIG Tuning wrench" and that's his market. On the other hand, if excessive force is applied to any component that does not readily move as it's supposed to, it can cause damage to other components.

I know of the big wrench, but 1) it isn't as clever as yours, and 2) he won't ship abroad or take paypal or something, so it's not even available. Combining the two ideas would make a perfect tool.
Would be even better if it also could be screwed into a hole in the endplate for safe storage. |

OK guys, you asked, and I made them.
Just finished a few 5mm wrenches in various configurations.
This puts me at 12 different styles of wrenches that I now make!
I've added added two grooves and filled them with the exotic color "Cream Pink" (from my wife's nail polish drawer) for easy identification.
