I've been trying to 'expand' from 6-string (low to high CEGACE)by adding a D on top and an A below. In theory this gives a root at the bottom for minors and seventh chords, and the top string contains just the note you're looking for when playing melodies or licks on the top strings. Trouble is, the closer string spacing, and the fact that my picking fingers are searching for the right strings amongst 8, instead of the 6 I'm used to (I've played regular guitar for years) merans that I still feel more 'at home' on my 6-string. Should I persevere?

I assume your question is rhetorical, since nothing of value is accomplished in the face of challenge without perseverance.

Having said that, we are all creatures of habit, and your familiarity with 6-string spacing is merely a habit and one that is easy to change at that. My experience has been that it takes two weeks, maximum, to become familiar with something new. String spacing is one of the easiest things to adapt to, IMHO.

The two extra strings will open your eyes and ears tremendously. Get to work!

I find that working with an eight string lap steel has improved my six string playing quite a bit. The narrower string spacing takes some time getting used to, but when you go back to the six string spacing, it feels HUGE.
Definitely keep at it. It will get better.
