For an experiment, I want to string my S12U for A6/D9 (down a full step).

Just curious if anyone else has done this and what guages they are using.

Pete, the gauges that I use for D6th are on my tunings page. See http://b0b.com/tunings/blee.htm#crossover

That might help get you in the ball park on the high strings. I'd use a .020p for the A string to accomodate the full-step raise.

An old friend of mine and Mike Perlowin's in LA named Dave Ziegler did that about 25 years ago. I don't know if he still does or not as I haven't talked to him in years. Also Jim Bob Sedgwick of the Forum tunes his 1st neck to D9. I'm not sure what gauges you'd need but maybe Bobbe Seymore could tell you. I tune one of my Telecasters down a whole step and on that I just go up two gauges on the size, example: My reg. 1st string being a 9 so on the D guitar I use an 11.

Hey Pete, how's that lowered tuning workin' out? Do you experience any advantages/disadvantages musically or mechanically?

Keep on pickin'!

Hey Glenn,
I'm going to wait untill after the Dallas and Chattanooga conventions are over to change string guages and really give the idea a work out (without fear of a total trainwreck hanging over me).

From what I can tell from tuning down a normal S12U set of strings, all the pedal stops will have to be re-set, and the pedal travel will be shorter.

I'll let you know in a few weeks.
Pete

For anyone who is interested: I play D-10,
D-9, C-6. For you fellas who play universals, I do not know if this will help you, but here are my guages for the 10 string D-9. 13/16/11/15/20. All the other 5 strings are wound: 24/30/34/38/42. I find they balance well for me and stay in tune very well. You will definitely get more mileage out of the strings prior to breakage. Hope this helps.
