Common Tunings?
I saw a post for alternative tunings, but what are the standard tunings for Dobro or Lap steel. I've been using the open G tuning. Anyone else?

For acoustic lap steel guitar, open G is probably the most popular tuning. Most people use this tuning (bass to treble):
G B D G B D
although some use this tuning:
D G D G B D
For electric lap steel guitar, C6/Am7 is very popular:
C E G A C E
as is open E:
E B E G# B E
or open D:
D A D F# A D
See my page of tunings for some other tunings.

What type of music you are playing as well as how many necks you have at your disposale make it a heck of a lot easier to give a better answer to this question...also how far you want to go w/the instrument...learning a new tuning if you've been playing in Dobro G can br either a lot of work or a lot of fun, electrically C6 or C13 can cover a lot of ground...acoustically you are better off IMHO sticking to an open tuning, G,A,E,D etc. it also makes a difference if you are playing solo or in a band context, email me joe, if I can be of any more help, Paisano,
