This is what it's all about. Texas swing played by Nashville's best, for the wonderful Johnny Bush. Thank Ray Pennington for producing this gem, and taking a chance with two steel guitars. Unbelievable playing! However RCA, in all their wisdom (NOT!) thought so little of it that they never put it on an album... However it did end up on CDs after the fact, namely on a Rhino comp (that I can't seem to find among my CDs).

| Hey Joe, That is great. Love the way they trade off at the end. It was on Legends of Guitar, Country Vol. 2, on Rhino. It was a great series that Rhino did with Guitar Player Magazine, There was country vol.1&2, 50's vol. 1&2,and rock 1&2. Great liner notes on the guitar players involved. On the country ones they always say who the steel players were. Thanks for putting up songs every week. |

Cool, Joe. Thanks. I found this 45 in a little record store in Pasadena, TX in the late 70's. I didn't know Pennington produced it. Two steel guitars, how awesome. Owen Bradley did a Loretta Lynn song with two steels, Hal and Don Helms, can't remember what song it was; kind of a stretch for country music fans.

OK, here's a question for everybody, and maybe somebody who really knows can answer. Maybe Herb can ask Johnny Bush?
Were any of the lead instruments overdubbed? It's hard to believe that Harold Bradley played that solo right out of the box, and that the steel stuff was all so perfect on a particular take. I would think that because it was produced by Ray Pennington, that he might have wanted the best that the pickers could give him, hence some ODs. I'm not saying that any of those guys couldn't have played that stuff perfectly live, but for them all to have.... Just saying....

BTW this cut can be found on one of Johhny Bush's greatest hits c.d....If memory serves me correctly it's on the first one. I remember I was blown away when I heard it the first time...almost ran off the road when they started pickin'

Found it on Johnny Bush's website. It's on his "Greatest Hits, Vol. 1". Great thing is you order directly from Johnny, no middle man. This guy comes to Scotty's regularly, hung with him and the rest of the wild boys and girls after hours at Scotty's last year. Alas, can't make it this year....

I sure remember Johnny telling me they were both at the session at the same time. You need to hear the cut of "secret love and "Tennessee to Texas" from the same session. I will call John and ask him what he remembers. He has a pretty good memory.
* There are two cuts of "home in San Antone" floating around out there. One is the RCA cut, and one is the same track, but the key is lowered and Johnny overdubs the vocal, and chops off the jamming at the end. The original cut is my favorite. I'll listen to this one and if it's not the original, I'll post it.
