here is another one i found. there is no sound at the
start but half way in there is sound. it's a live concert some where in a parking lot. you can here tom real good and there is a quick shot of him playing
his ZB.

In the open air concert clip he had Dennis Larden on guitar.
Bobby Neal was on the other ones. He died with Rick Nelson in the plane accident.
Although without steel guitar the "Live 1983- 1985" is worth having.

There was a used ZB in Ray Hennings Heart of Texas in Austin many years ago when I was looking for my first steel, and I used to sniff around it every time I went in there. I had asked Ray what he wanted for it and he told me it belonged to Tom Brumley, and told me a story about he and Tom. Said he would have to ask him about the steel. Came in there a few weeks later and asked Ray if he had talked to Tom and he said, "No, but he's right back there messing with it so go ask him." I walked back in the back area and he was bent over the case and I said "Excuse me Mr. Brumley." He politely asked me to call him Tom. We got to talk for a few minutes, I don't remember any of the conversation cause I was star struck, probably made a "real impression" on him! I do remember that he talked to me like I was a friend from the first word he spoke to me. What a nice guy, and an amazing steel player. I've kicked myself many times for not dropping the money on that steel when I had the chance.

Hi Doug, Loved your story. Yes, Ray was a good friend of ours. If it's the one that has a plaque on the front, saying Tom Brumley, I still have it. I'm selling it for $8000.00. It has so much history with it. He used it with Rick Nelson, and many many others.Thanks, Rolene Brumley

Hi Rolene! It could be the one, but so many years have passed, I can't be sure. I remember it had a pad on the back like this one, but... too many years ago!

I have moved and cannot place my hands on the copy of FRETTS with Tom's interview. However, if memory serves me correctly, he had an eleven string tuning at the time of the interview.

I did not know that. Interesting!!
What a beautiful guitar!!
Thanks Rolene for the new pix. It also seems to show 11 strings.
I just learned why I can't play like Tom -- I have 12 strings -- not just 11.

I have had the pleasure of seeing this ZB SD11. It`s a stunning guitar with a tone to match. For the active player, this combines great looks with that classic ZB tone, and for the collector, - well, this one won`t exactly depreciate over time!
And like it was pointed out, Tom Brumley used 11 strings so as to be able to duplicate Don Rich`back up licks when Don himself was busy singing harmony with Buck.
But aside from that, the expanded E9th. tuning with 11 strings offers many possibilities. Tom himself said that the 11th. string made the C6 neck superfluous, since he got the jazzier sounds he wanted. And hearing him do "Take the A Train" during a Joey Riley show, I could have sworn he was playing C6!
This ZB is a rare treasure from Hall of Famer Tom Brumley and a good investment |
