I would like to express my gratitude to Joseph Barcus, Ernie, Renn, and Paul Sutherland for helping me understand how to create the Forum tablatures. Thanks, guys!!!

This is my first, but hopefully not the last. I always like this song and thought we might do it with our band, so I listened to it and came up with this. Please feel free to point out any errors. stevet

Heh thanks a lot, Dan; I appreciate it. All these years I've been on The Forum and have not tabbed anything out. Other guys have been gold mines. Since I'm retired now, I hope to do I can do more of these.

The solo is now up there. stevet

Thanks, Steve. Always liked that song. I saw Roseanne Cash open for Allison Krauss in Pittsburgh about 10 years ago - real enjoyable concert.

Thanks, Jeff. I envy you; wish I'd been able to see and hear Rosanne Cash, especially in my hometown of Pittsburgh. Even though it's devoid of pedal steeI, I like her recent song, "Sea of Heartbeak" sung with Bruce Sprignsteen. It's the old Don Gibson chestnut. stevet

Just heard Seven Year Ache on my machine. Always loved the steel parts and hoped one day to be able to play them.

Man, how neat it is and what a treat to be able to look it up and go right to the answers.

1. who played it?
2 what strings did he pick and when?

Thanks b0b, really appreciate it!

I found this on a thread from 2014. I always wondered about that sound on the intro of Seven Year Ache.

Mr. Devito contacted me Monday and delivered this awesome info in his message:

" FYI, The intro to Seven year Ache was played using an E-Bow then double tracked. People always think it's a synth rather than steel guitar."

Very cool. I always thought it was a very clean steel signal mixed with a synth.

I've always wondered how that sound that sounded like it came from a "moog" was created.

To my ear it began at the start of the tune.

So if I'm reading this correctly it was done by Hank with an Ebow.

Neat how he went from Ebow to no-Ebow so quickly at 1:20.

Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Thanks all.

PS: could someone explain what is meant by "double tracked"?

Thanks again.

Ray,
Going from E-bow to straight Steel was probably a punch in. It can probably be done live, but in a studio there is no reason to not stop the tape and get the player settled.

Double-tracking just means recording the same thing twice. It gives the voice or instrument a bigger fuller sound than a single track. Similar to the Phil Spector “wall of sound” concept, where you had 5 rhythm guitarists all strumming the same chords. Phil recorded in mono though, so you had to actually have 5 guitarists on the session.

I think we can all agree that the steel sound on that intro/recurring theme is...HUGE!
