Well, I have to agree w/u. All of that and not made up either! Incidently Bill, you would have had to be there a loooong time ago to get that one.Are you old enuf to remember Jooyun? He was a good'un and the pic displays the grin he most always wore. And I really don't know how to describe his musical talent.I guess "monster" comes to mind. I loved him as a person and a picker.Fred |

Fred, I am 63 and yes I do remember Julian. He was definately a stylist. I wasn't as interested in steel back then as now. I only wish I had been. Steelers today are still trying to emulate some those pioneers but can't.

Well I'm pushing 77 and still recall vividly, Julian jamming at MSA and me watching. I turned to look at him as he played something off to my ear. He said: What ?? I said that it sounded wrong. He replied something like; there is no wrong, just different !!

Julians son told that there is a Gospel album
that Julian had recorded that never was 'released'
during Julians lifetime, and that Julians family plans
to have it available as well as another CD
which will be a compilation of live stuff.
They're planning on having them available
sometime in the first quarter of next year.
I was enthralled hearing his son speak,
as his voice sounds identical to Julians.

I met Julian Tharpe for the first time in 1969 at the D J Convention in Nashville. At the time he was playing a D-10 MSA guitar in the MSA display room.
A few years later at another D J Convention, Chuck Wright delivered a S-12 PSG that he had built for Julian. This guitar had 11 pedals & 6 knee levers. I believe his tuning was F-9/6. ???
Bobby Caldwell joined Julian for a jam session at the Andrew Jackson Hotel one evening and they played for about 6 hours, taking requests from the large crowd that had gathered in this hotel room.
On Saturday night that week Julian backed Barbara Mandrell at the Opry. While Julian was backing Barbara, he had acquired a group of 5--6 fans standing on stage, just behind him. They included Hal Rugg, Spider Wilson & Kayton Roberts.
This remains my favorite memeory of my many trips to Music City U.S.A. |

| roger: i was in nashville that same week, i beleive the msa was a white d10. i don't remember the s12 but the tuning that he played on the 14 string was a E9th/6 chromatic. i grew up in new brockton al,(about 20 miles from ozark al.) also had the honor of playing with julian a lot of times over the years. the last job we worked together was the oasis club near dothan, al. i played fiddle and steel, and julian played steel and steel and steel.....thanks jack |

| Thanks Russ for remebering Julian, as I have said before, I had the pleasure of knowing him and playing with him 70 thru 72 when I got to pick bass for Mr. Price. I learned to love him. What memories, to have played with him and Phil Baugh and of course the king Ray. db |

Actually, he began with F6/9 on the Wright then later dropped it to E6/9.
After the white Wright he went to a S-14 Sho-Bud.

The One thing that stands out in my mind, was he was in the MSA room with 7 or 8 of us standing around listening to him. And he played "Danny Boy" without using his Bar, all he used was pedal and knee levers.
I thought that was something, And I guess it really was. I mean he put ever cord in the song in it. |

The highlight of the Steel Guitar Convention this year for me was the induction of my friend Julian E. THarpe into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame.
Julian was my friend, mentor and hero. I spent hour upon hour trying to copy his licks and sounds. Though some have told me that I sound alot like Julian, even though I tried as hard as I might, I never could get all his licks, only a few. The real truth is no one never has, nor ever will copy his style completely. Cowboy Eddie Long has got as close to Julian as anyone I probably have ever heard. Cowboy studied with Julian as well. By the way, Cowboy is one of my favorite players these days!
Julian was one of a kind. He was truly a Master of the 14 string steel guitar. He could play it all on steel and often did.
Yes, it is true that there will be some unreleased material/recordings of Julian released at a future date. Julian's family has asked that I collaborate with them on the project. I promise you this, when it is released it will be great!
