Willy Roy (The Crippled Boy)was Doc Williams' first recording, backed with "Silver Bell". He recorded it in Cleveland, OH in 1947, where they lived at the time, directly to a disc master. He said that was the only time he ever did that, using tape afterwards.
He saw an article in the newspaper about a 13-year-old boy, Lannie Hurst, who had lost his leg to cancer. Doc said that inspired him to write the song and he did in fact vist Lannie in the hospital. It was on WHEELING #1002-A (I still have the 45rpm). He said Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper first recorded it.

Doc his just had all of his early material released on a CD "The Early Years, 1947-1960". (WR-505) This has the original cuts, not re-records.

Doc, now 86 years of age, says that his farewell appearance will be at the Bean Soup Festival in McClure, PA on Sept 16st with his daughter Karen. Doc last appeared on the WWVA Jambore on March 8, 1998.
He also has for sale copies of his "guitar course" that ran on WWVA,WCKY, KXEL and XEG from 1950-55. On three cassettes, you get 2 hours and 20 minutes of Doc, Chickie and Border Riders. All three cassette are $30 total plus $3.00 shipping.
