6 string 2 pedal for beginners Together Again

Post by Dave Dube »

Standard caveat concerning Tuning: Inside 6 E9 ( E-F#-G#-B-E-G#) or if you are using B-E-G#-B-E-G# tuning you will need to be careful to move string 6 of the tab to string 5.

Code: Select all

10 str E9 6 str E 6 str
3 G# 1 G#
4 E 2 E
5 B 3 B
6 G# 4 G#
7 F# 5 E
8 E 6 B
Here's a tab for beginners to learn on 6 sring (or more) E9. It only requires the A & B pedals. It was posted by Andy Sandoval from (Appropriately) Bakersfield, CA. In the link here you will find tab from Andy and also a link to a video by Joe Barcus.

It's funny how sometimes you see posts on the forum that deride players for playing A & B all night...then you look at the classic material by consummate pros and you see them playing ...what? Yep. Obviously there's more to playing steel than that, but there's nothing wrong with it either. Just sayin.. :) So don't let them talk you down.

There's a great lick in there that imitates a B lower, which Jeff newman called the X lever. It only uses the b pedal. Playing strings 3 & 5 it moves from 2nd fret no pedals (in key of C#) to 1st fret with B pedal. The trick is to play the change smoothly. This technique was taught in Winnie Winston's book, so here is the application in a song.

Here is an interesting post from Tom Brumley himself, from just about 8 years ago. Tells his tuning and copedent and his bar choice. The whole discussion is pretty good and well worthwhile reading.

Hi guys!
I was playing an early 60 model Fender 1000 that I inherited from Jay McDonald when I started with Buck.

Actually I had a standard 8 string E9th tuning with 3 pedals and no knee levers (no cromatics).

My bar is one I had used for years that I bought at a music store. It was a small tapered hollow bar.

I used both the guitar and bar on my first album with Buck which included "Together Again"

                                                                                           -Tom Brumley

Finally, if you master the foregoing section, here is a video that actually shows the backup licks which might get you further along toward playing the whole song. It shows the hands and feet. See if you can cop some licks. Good exercise to get thinking like a steel player. The tab above is in C# which is the Buck owens key, but this video is in C so after you learn the licks you will have to play them up a fret to match the solo.
