"Together Again" - Vince Gill Live - Paul Franklin Break

Post by Jeff Garden »

***UPDATE 8/22/19*** I went over this with Josh Hicks today and have a few minor changes to pages 1 and 3. The first line of Page 1 plays a lot slicker now...same notes but the BC pedals on strings 4 and 6 are a lot easier than the original G lever thing on string 1. Also, upon further review, PF doesn't use any slants on this and 13BD fills the bill now. On Page 3 line 2, smoothed out the transition from 13 down to 10 and on line 3 added a note on string 4 at the 8th fret. The photos here now reflect the changes. Thanks Josh!***

Here's a killer break by Paul Franklin backing up Vince Gill and the Time Jumpers on a live version of "Together Again". This was a request for Josh Hicks. This is the definition of pedal steel with emotion. Paul has a lot of nuances, pedal timing moves, and bar vibrato - here's my best effort at trying to write it down. Questions, comments, and corrections always welcome.

The steel community never had a better friend than Vince Gill. He loves the instrument and has always put John Hughey and Paul Franklin right up front. I've seen Vince just smile and shake his head during solos by both John and Paul as if to say, "are you kidding me???!" :)

Note: EE lever lowers string 2 a full tone, G lever raises string 1 a full tone and string 2 a half tone.

Here it is on youtube. The break starts at 1:36

Thanks for putting this together, Jeff! Your tabs have been super helpful for me. I was determined to crack the exact way he plays that second phrase at 1:44. I wrote this out and I hope you don’t mind my leaving it here as an alternative or addition to your tab.
