Anyone replace GFI-II pickups? With what? Suggestions?

Anyone replace GFI-II pickups? With what? Suggestions?

Post by Jim Fogarty »

Hey,

Got a beautiful, great playing GFI D-10 Ultra, during the pandemic. I love it. But it's an older model, with the GFI-II pickups. After a few months playing it, I feel like they're a wee bit flat and dull, to my ears.

Has anyone replaced them? If so, with what? Did you find it worthwhile? Would you do it again?

Suggestions?

Thanks!

hi jim, E66 and GFI III are brighter and clearer and can be installed easy on your guitar. Wallace True Tone is a single coil, also goes well, many like it. for my likes the BL 705 is the best pickup, never had it on my GFI but on my other guitar. i`d say go for an E 66, they're easy to come by and are used by many and will clear up your sound.

I have a 2000 year model D-10 Ultra. When I got it there was a George L's E66 on the E9th and a stock GFI II on C6th. I replaced them both with new Lawrence 710's. I had 710's on the Franklin and like them much better.

I replaced the GFI-II with an AlumiTone on my 2006 Ultra S-10 It makes the guitar a bit brighter. The sound is more like a single coil. Although I haven't played out with it yet, it seems like it would get me all the way to the front of the stage without a problem. I made the swap on the recommendation of others who have been satisfied with the AlumiTone. The pickup isn't readily adjustable but the height under the strings is about right when it sits on the guitar deck.
