E13 for me. Close intervals for melody lines, and all the main chord groups on a straight bar: M6/m7, M7, dom9/m6/m7b5 etc.
My preference is always to play the melody pretty straight and unadorned, ... |

The Stringmaster is just a fancy lap steel, so if your lap steels sound good to you through your Cube, the Stringmaster should as well. I use my 5e3 clone at home as that's my electric guitar amp, but ...

I use the 5th on top, though lowered a 1/2 to B6. Doc Stein recommended it to me as a useful swing tuning and I find it to be true. I like having that minor 3rd on top. I also like having the higher p ...

Well the Stringmaster has a lot more mass than the Deluxe , that's got to affect the sound. I have owned and played both , found the Stringmaster to have way more depth to the tone.

Also, while moving slants around can certainly be intimidating, it's a pretty important technique and should be practiced. Don't forget, a healthy vibrato can cover a multitude of pitch sins

I use a truncated E13 on 6-string:

I use E13 and B6 on my Stringmaster. See also http://cindycashdollar.com/tunings/
E13 is my main tuning and is what PSG E9 developed from. The B6 is the same as C6, just a 1/2 step down. |

For my needs, slants are useful as another way to get a harmony, usually a minor 6th. Slants are also extremely important for walk-ups/downs. I tend to avoid whole-step slants -- i.e. a slant that spa ...

Best to learn without reverb as it can become a crutch.
But, in my Hawaiian trio -- upright bass/uke/lap steel -- I use a fair amount (if the amp has it) to help fill out the sound. |
