Try just a cable from send to return on the amp. If that works fine, that will tell you that the problem is most likely NOT the amp.

Are you sure you're not connecting it backwards? Try reversing the in and out cables.

How much weight does it save under the stock PV NV 400 cabinet?

Does the pink label make it sound better?

Put an oscilloscope on it to see the waveform. Sounds like clipping to me.
