The question of 50-year-old electrolytic capacitors is not IF they will FAIL (they will) but when?
Sarno's mods replace the electolytics with polypros, which is a good idea.

I always wondered what these guitars sound like. Is the body hollow inside like a Gibson ES-330, or have a block o' wood down the middle like a ES-335? Is is usable acoustically?

Try just a cable from send to return on the amp. If that works fine, that will tell you that the problem is most likely NOT the amp.

Put an oscilloscope on it to see the waveform. Sounds like clipping to me.
