Totally a guess on my part, but I have the feeling all were built as 6 strings and some converted later.

Some originals were definitely built as 7-strings. These were offered right from the beginni ...

I've seen them both with and without. Oahu used the exact same catalog picture from 1939 through 1941, if not later. It's entirely possible that they stopped using them without updating the pic.

It's a pre-War (Kay-built) 299K Tonemaster.

That's not a '50s but a pre-War body. It's cut to hold a 1.5" pickup and does not have a bakelite back.

The National and Dobro versions (and the Supro and Bronson versions) have the same pickup. In practical terms, the only difference is in the shape of the body and the placement of the controls. Later ...

It's the earliest Audiovox design, introduced somewhere between 1933 and 1935. The tone knob is most likely a later addition. It's interesting that the nut and bridge are slotted for six strings; all ...

It's a modified Harmony from the late '30s. They were sold through Sears, and probably elsewhere:

I'm not sure what's going on, except that those magnets don't belong there. They're probably the reason for the imbalance in the first place.

I actually think the top one is a replica of an Electar Model M. The headstock shape is wrong, it's missing the metal top plate, the position of the bridge is wrong and the pickup rout is too small fo ...

I've owned an identical EH-185, and I've also owned an earlier EH-150 with a CC pickup.

While the 150 has limited sustain due to its hollow construction, the 185 has much, much better sustain thank ...

Definitely not a Kay either. I think you were probably right that it's a Guldan.

Gibson had two acoustic Hawaiian models in 1940, the Roy Smeck model (dreadnought shape) and the smaller HG-00. The necks are not exactly square in profile, but in between a round and square shape.

Shares obvious heritage with this "Sherwood".

Sherwood was the house brand of Montgomery Ward in the '40s and early '50s, before they replaced it with Airline.

Thanks very much! Any id ...

It's a Kay with an added tuning-changing tailpiece. It was sold through Montgomery Ward as model 8394 in the early-mid '50s; I'm not sure if it was available under other brands.

It's definitely not a Valco product. I can't say who did build it, but it's not a manufacturer that I'm familiar with.

There were at least four major versions of the Eharp, one by Epiphone and three by Valco, using at least three pickup designs. Which one do you have, and what's wrong with the current pickup?
