I just pulled it out again and inspected--there is no repair that I can detect. It is just the way the Bakelite is.

I’ve got one very similar, except no tone control. I use a high quality tenor ukulele soft case and it fits perfectly. Congrats on the nice axe!

Hollow-neck frying pans sound good even without an amp. I wouldn't say I like it better than plugged in, but it's a very pleasant sound for quiet practice.
