From your description, the pickup needs a rewind or to be replaced . If the coil is open , yes it will still work , though poorly . | |

I believe that 5D4 indicates the circuit was designed in 1954 . The production code is EA , which I think indicates a January 1955 build date . | |

Has the guitar always had this issue ? Maybe switch string brands , try nickel instead of stainless steel , or vice versa . A better bar perhaps . Jerry | |

If the song is in C major , then a good place to start would be the C major scale , harmonized in 3rds . That's about as basic as it gets . | |
