So my suggestion is pick one and stay with it!

Valuable advice...learn on tuning well! Particularly if you wish to read off staff notation like steel players sometimes did in years past.

Another A6 player - but I also re-tune to C6, C6/A7, E7, E13, B11. All can be done on the same set of strings on my 6 strings.

I can't wrap my brain around any re-entrant tunings, though.

Even Andy Iona, the song's composer, played some big, rich chords. I really like the vibe of his version, too.

Thanks for mentioning the composer's version!

Never underestimate Iona.

I guess I can switch back and forth with the same string gauges? Why is A6 better for Western Swing specifically?

A6 is a common tuning for Western swing, along with several others like E13, etc. ...

I'm not super qualified to answer this here but the C# gives a tritone with the E in the open position. That tritone gives you access to dominant 7th chords without slanting (and you can get the ful ...

I suppose you could also simply tune your E's up to F for blues, but I don't think I've done that.

I used to pull the 6ths up to the b7 behind the bar as needed.

I don't use G6 but years of playing standard guitar and dobro seemed to make C6 a strange transition.... I prefer A6.

I have used A6 as my main playing tuning for some decades now, but at one point ...

I heard a tune off this recording a couple days ago on local radio.

It was a slow-ish tune, sort of like a cross between "Sleepwalk" and something Lindley would have played tone-wise.

I really like this example - simple, classic lap steel lines, very functional, doesn't try to be a "little guitar" with 2 humbuckers and an adjustable bridge, etc.

Nice job.

You could make a small plate that fits the opening and use smaller modern switches. Save the original unit, too.

You can change the C6 neck to A6 as needed ( or vice versa) so I'd go with an E on top, and the 2nd neck in E13.

I use several variations of A6 on one neck:

F# A C# E F# A C# E

E A C# E F# A ...

I use that tuning and a variant, B D E G# C# E. It workswell for many things.

Filiberto used to have a guitar teaching studio in New Orleans, and I
met him in his elder days, a very nice man.

Open D or E are quite useful!
