I use jar lid openers and usually attach with a dab or two of silicone.

You may be referring to twin neck pedal steels where an option offered is to have one neck set-up as a guitar and the second neck set-up with a black pad for player comfort. Is this what you mean?

Or just stay in GBDGBD and learn the wealth of forward and reverse and split slants, and two-note chords, that will get you whatever chord you need.

Any suggestions on string gages for this tuning ...

A "tang" is a protrusion to fit in a mating pocket. Think of it as the prongs on an electrical plug going in a socket......outlet is the neck, prongs are the tang.
