Two things I can think of:

• Have you traced the circuit and verified that the two batteries are hooked up in series to give 18v operating voltage or do they provide 9v to different circuits?

It's a two position switch. Center pin for each of the two poles (independent circuits) contacts to the outside pin matching the handle position.

You can't take a regular direct box and feed it with the output of your amplifier. You'll ruin the amp, which is expecting to see a 4 or 8 ohm load from the speaker.
