Definite Phishing e-mail. DO NOT answer it, just delete it.

Anytime you get one that doesn't (1) specifically mention your name and (2) asks for personal data it's not legitimate. The fact the e-mail address of the people given as "hotmail" is another giveaway.

"SEND THIS E-MAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW"

This is one of the keys that hoax messages almost always have. If you see that it's a good sign the message is not true.

Every half year or so some idiot gets his jollies by starting a hoax chain letter that is slightly altered from a previous hoax. If you simply delete these silly messages you will do a favor to the people who might otherwise have been drawn into the scam, had you forwarded it as requested.

The hoax letter published by Bob, in post #3, is a very standard template that has been used for at least ten years. It is designed to cause panic in the recipients, who are then conditioned into taking the desired action. In the case of the hoaxes the action is forward it to everyone you know. This type of junk mail wastes people's time to read it and decide if it is real or fake (they are always fake). It can also lead gullible people into believing that everything in that message is a fact, sometimes causing them to damage their own computers in their panicked state of mind. They are impressed by the dropping of names like Snopes, McAfee, Microsoft, CNN, and AOL. This trick is used over and over in chain letter Internet hoaxes.

You can entertain yourself and read about the Burning Hard Disk Hoax on Symantec.com.

Do NOT forward such hoax messages! Delete them! If you are concerned for the sanity of the person who forwarded the message to you reply to that person and tell them to stop being so gullible. Point them to websites that debunk such common hoaxes, so they can be brought up to speed on what is real and what is BS.
