Brad,
Any chance of doing an A/B recording clip with/without the BB? I'd love to get a general idea of what is does and how it effects the overall tone?
Also, does it add *any* noise?

Bob, I haven't made any audio clips yet, but it's a good idea. It's funny, I had Danny Muhammed on the phone the other day. He just got a Black Box and really likes it. He was playing back a recording over the phone that had one version with the BB and one without. I could clearly hear the difference even over the phone. The midrange was dense and kind of harsh without it. With the BB, the notes came right thru the phone real clear and distinct. It ain't subtle I guess. I'll try and figure out how to post audio on my website so others can hear the A/B factor.

I also purchased a Black Box and have to admit that it the best investment I have made for tone enhancement in a long time.

The Hilton does properly buffer the input, that is one of it's great strengths.
With a high quality solidstate stage.
But Brad's box does this with true audiophile quality tube / pickup interaction.
Like plugging in directly to a $75,000 audiophile tube home stereo and no pedal.
Just your steel and perfection.
This being one of the reasons many players just love their tube amps to death... until they move them to the car.
This tube to pickup interaction is at the heart of a good sound, then you send it to a Hilton and there is no degradation by the pot, since there is no pot pickup contact,,

I just have to say I love my Sarno Black Box. It sounds to me like it evens out the tone without really compressing it. Mellows it, without making it muddy, adds a "mastered" like sound to the steel.

The Black Box adds only about 1.5dB of gain. That's pretty darn close to unity (zero gain). So I wouldn't call it a significant boost by any means.

| With all due respect, what can this pre-amp do that any other rack mount tube pre-amp can't? I mean, you can get pretty much any tube pre-amp with all the knobs in the world for around or less than 3 bills. . . most people can't tell the difference between the tube sounds that the Roland GP 100 can generate, and that unit comes with a tuner. . . you know, to get your E. This black box has peaked my interest, but $313.50 and one more thing to hook up to my rig seems a bit drastic. |

The box connects an audiophile quality tube preamp directly to your pick up,
causing a coupling which is sonicly very advantageous. They used to do this with turntable needles back in the day.
After that you can do what you like with it through pedals, amps, consoles etc.
But I don't know of another device that does this.
And plugging into your best ever pedal and then into the best tube amp isn't the same thing.
