| This past week I had occasion to ship a small amplifier across country and back and used the US Postal Service both ways. The amp arrived safe and sound on both trips, with no problems at all. Even arrived on the scheduled dates. Just thought I ought to mention this for fair balance. Every once in awhile, it's good to catch someone doing something right, doncha think? |

| In the pursuit of fairness....I just rec'd a Sho-Bud Pro I steel and a Peavey 2x12 amp,both shipped UPS ground, and they arrived PERFECTLY also... |

I shipped a 1930 Gibson L1 (6 string guitar) from Brantford, Ontario, Canada to Austin, Texas a few months ago, via UPS. Triple boxed.
Arrived ahead of schedule and in perfect condition. |

| I've always had excellent experience with US Postal Service (USPS). Either Purolator or Canada Post take over when it crosses from US into Canada. Besides, they only charge $5 for brokerage, compared to $45 with UPS or Fedex. However, even the best carrier will botch a poorly packaged item. |

Just received 2 steels, both cross country trips.
Both arrived in the same amount of time (5 days) and both boxes were in the same condition (no damage).
One was shipped UPS.
One was shipped FedEx.
(insert Twilight Zone lick here).

| I recently had a pre-war bakelite Rick shipped to me in Ohio from Montana via UPS. (As well as its original amp & the tubes; steel, amp & tubes shipped in their own individual box; 3 boxes total.) Everything was double-boxed. The outer boxes were somewhat banged up upon arrival, but nothing out of the ordinary for going from Montana to Ohio. Everything inside was in perfect shape. After having read many horror-stories here at the Forum, I was sweating bullets at the prospect of having a bakelite steel shipped, but my worries were for nothing. I have had steels shipped thru UPS & FedEx, and haven't had any trouble yet. |

Elipsis and italics are mine.
"Yet" is the operative word. I've shipped many guitars and amps, and had them shipped to me. Mostly UPS or USPS, occasionally FedEx. I've lost one amp, had one severely damaged, and one amp with the tolex torn but otherwise okay. All done by UPS. All guitars arrived safely. Generally speaking, it's a relatively good record, but any damage is frankly, damage. And getting the insurance for the lost Sho~Bud amp was a MAJOR HASSLE.
Never had any problems with USPS at all. But that's not to say it couldn't happen.
Is the item priceless or irreplaceable? Use NEXT DAY AIR. If I have any anxiety about something being shipped to me, and that's happened with a Bigsby steel and two Standel amplifiers, I bite the bullet and have them shipped NEXT DAY AIR. On a Bigsby steel, that's like $225. But I reckon I can find $225 easier than I can find another Bigsby steel.
I don't know if it's any safer, since anything can happen anywhere, but the item is not being handled as much, not being on as many forklifts, trucks, going from loading dock to loading dock, etc. Fewer hands mean fewer opportunities for screwing up. At least, I have more peace of mind... and that's worth something.
