Yo Guys....This is an excercise for me to try and overcome some of my dibilitating perfectionism, red light fever issues, and option anxiety that have always kept me from finishing any of my "real" musical efforts. Now that I'm 52, I need to get over these psycho-musical problems asap. BTW, I don't really have this problem on gigs singing and playing all the honky tonk "hits"...just on my own more involved stuff. Yes, I do play "Way to Survive", "Working Man Blues" etc etc.
At the prompting of my son and my friend Jeff Lampert, I decided I was going to take only 5 passes at this unaccompanied steel + vocal redition of one of my favorite "post-bop" jazz tunes by one of my jazz heros (Charlie Mingus)about one of his heros (Lester Young), then pick the best one and put it out there for all to hear and critique. Yikes! I played C6 directly into the board and sang along at the same time. I had to do it this way because of our recording set-up's limitatations. This was the best take, but certainly not perfect. I did add some delay after the fact to sweeten it up a bit.
Now that I know that it can be done, maybe I'll get more comforfortable doing it....then you'll probably never shut me up.

Rick I guess this is a mutual admiration society. I won't say what you did is great, because it's beyond that. What you did is haunting, I felt like I was surrounded by ghosts settling in my mind. You created an environment, a mood. You did justice to this song, Mingus, and Young in a way that I'm not sure any other steel player could. Thanks for a wonderful piece of work.

Man, talk about talent deserving wider recognition! I expected to be impressed, but wow.... I'm amazed.
It's one thing to have chops, but to know how to use them to create an emotional connection is what music is really all about.
Rick, I wish you could take a break from the honky-tonk trenches and do the jazz festival circuit sometime. Maybe after the album comes out....

Great job Rick. My comment to Jeff applies to you too. I'd like to see you (either of you) playing in a strictly jazz band.
Assuming Miles Davis was still alive, could you imagine what it would do for our instrument if he were to hire either of you, or Reece or Hal Nerrill or Bob Tailifer or Buddy or Doug J or Hal Rugg to play with him as some big jazz festival? |
