Buddy's 1963 New York recording was reviewed on National Public Radio's Fresh Air program today, 09 June. (I believe the morning show is repeated in the evening--maybe a few can catch it.) Several extended clips were played, and the host intro segment was provocative. Noting the lack of inroads into jazz, she said pedal steel can more readily be heard in Nigerian Ju-Ju music and on Bollywood (Indian) movie soundtracks than in American jazz. (Kind of begs the question--so roundly ignored by some of the jazz heavies on this Forum--asked in the languishing JAZZPLAYERS thread, doesn't it?)

The favorable (but not fawning) review was by Kevin Whitehead, a Chicago jazz critic. He has obviously done some homework as he references Bob Dunn.

Kevin also makes the historical assertion that pedals were added to steel guitars to produce richer, jazzier chords.

Pretty interesting stuff, and fun to hear on a national radio show.

I listened to the sound clip of the NPR review of the reissue of Buddy Emmons' early jazz album and it got me thinking that it would be a wonderful tribute to Buddy if Terry Gross could interview him on Fresh Air.
