According to Lorene Ruymar's book, in the section on the development of tunings, she states that many feel Bernie Ka'ai Lewis was the first to publish arrangements in the C6 tuning (ECAGEC) in 1945. The tuning was developed by Jerry Byrd in 1938 and was first recorded by him in 1939, playing "Lovely Hula Hands." Apparently, Oahu was publishing tunes predominantly in A major, C#m, and E7 at the time.

There's no photo of Bernie Ka'ai Lewis in the book, though. And no mention of Paul Page in either Lorene's book or in "the bible," that being Hawaiian Music and Musicians, by George Kanahele.

The Hammond looks to be a B-3 model, the steel appears to be a Gibson.

Sometimes you gotta laugh. I e-mailed the person who posted this photo for sale on E-Bay. He insists it is - in fact - a photo of JB. I pointed out that ...
1) It doesn't look like him. I've seen him in both photos and videotape.
2) JB was never associated with Gibson instruments in his entire
professional career.
3) Knowledgeable folks on the Steel Guitar Forum agree that it isn't JB.

I referred him to Jack Byrd, Jerry's brother. How does that biblical quote go ... something to the effect of "they have eyes but do not see"?
