Has anyone used Cakewalk Home Studio 9? I saw it in the Sam Ash catalog for $89 and it looks like fun. Sort of a poor man's porta-studio, with a virtual keyboard and composer. Is it worth it, or are there better programs?

A better program for sure is the full blown Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. I think it was in Musicians Friend for $289. That is a great price and far less than what it cost originally.

Along with Cakewalk there is Cool Edit-Pro and SoundForge Vegas-Pro. Both of these are in the same ballpark as far as features and available plug-ins. I would suggest an upgrade to your sound card if you plan to record and playback at the same time.
