Mike,
What model JBL was it that was tested in the new King?

These speakers have a very "controlled" sound. The bass end is not as tight as the JBL or 1501 BW. High end won't reach the high end sparkle of a JBL E series or Black Widow 1501. mid range is controlled, as well.

The 4-ohm version I tried was one of several that Fender secured and I don't know if they are actually on the market as yet.

I actually didn't ask the model numbers of any of the other speakers I tried. Sam Marshall of Fender had several cabinets loaded with various speakers and didn't tell me what any of them were. I just played through all of them and they asked what I thought. Ironically, the one they later said was an expensive JBL was what sounded the best to me.

What I've heard since is that Fender wanted to load the Steel King with these JBL's but JBL wanted a minimum order of something like 5,000 units. Fender did not go for it. The prototypes I and others have been using is loaded with some new Eminence that Fender thought rivaled the JBL (also a 4-ohm version). I do not know this model number either but have enjoyed the sound on the beta test gigs I've done.
