I have been playing bass gigs for about 10 years, and only recently have I started pedal steel. I have an Ampeg SVT 3 pro rackmount amp that is 450 watts @ 4 ohms. This is the one w/ the tube pre-amp section. Being a bass amp, the amp has no reverb. If I were to put a rack mount reverb / delay / effects unit on the effects loop, would this amp do the job? I have a single 15 speaker cab, loaded w/ a 400 watt carvin speaker that I could use w/ this amp for steel. (The cabinet itself is old, and not very deep, so it is no good for bass.) I know that I could buy a used Peavey Nashville for slightly more than a good reverb unit would cost, but if I could get by with adding an effects unit, I could also use that same unit w/ my home recording gear. I play country bass gigs 3-5 nights a week, but I have only recently started learning on my D-10 MCI. Any ideas?

I had to finish a gig back in the 70's through an old Ampeg B-15 piggyback amp after my Twin Reverb died. Other than no reverb it was the best sound I ever had at the time. Go for it!  |

Many Bass amps work well for steel. I've used my wife's Peavey TNT115S Bass Amp a couple times, just to see what it does and it does a credible job.

Back in the mid '70's,when I was working w/ Tommy Overstreet,we had an endorsement w/ Ampeg. I was using 2,model VT-22's w/ 2,12" Altec-Lansing spkrs,in each cabinet.It was a "killer" steel amp but,it damn near "killed" me,carrying it around.It was a tube amp,therefore,had a humongous power xformer & output xformer,+ the 2 Altec-Lansings.And,we didn't have "roadies" back then,either.It was heavier than a Fender Twin w/ JBL's,but it sure had some great tone.

Weighs more than a twin w/JBL's. Wow that's a pretty heavy statement, Smiley. Get it, huh? HEAVY statement. Ho Ho Ho. Ha Ha Ha. Oh well, here comes boy the boys with the straight jacket and tranquilizers. Gotta run.

Your bass amp will work fine for steel. Get a "stomp box" delay or reverb unit. (Don't spend over $125.)
I use an Ibanez digital delay pedal, and it sounds much better than my Alesis midi-verb rack unit. Costs less too! |
