I want to have someone custom make me a tiny box with maybe 4 effects that I will supply audio clues for. I don't want 5000 programs on a rack size box of which maybe less than 4 are useful but are not quite there even with tweaking. Any suggestions?

I had a rack unit, that I built, years ago that was basically what you want to do. I took several "stomp box" units and built them into the rack unit with power supplies and remote switching. Worked great. One of the things I did, was the audio input/outputs for each unit were switched (the effect was completely out of the chain when it was switched out) internally with relays so that the signal never came out of the box until the final point. I had a remote control unit mounted on the guitar leg that controlled each unit individually.

The unit had an MXR Compressor, Boss Tone, DOD 565 Stereo Chorous (that I used for a Leslie Simulator) and a MXR Microamp (that also works like a Goodrich Matchbox).
