Since the other thread was getting a little long...
There is a "Guitar Player" magazine archive reprint of a Roy Buchanan interview here: http://www.guitarplayer.com/archive/artists/buchanan76.shtml

in which he states among other things that he pretty much started out on lap steel, "trying to emulate Jerry Byrd".
Have fun
Nick

Who is he talking about here?

Once I was playing a carnival in Oklahoma City, and this real country-looking guy came up to me and said, "I like the way you play. You feel like jamming a bit?" I don't remember who he was, but he also played piano with Hank Thompson. Well, that son of a gun came in with the oldest damn Gibson I'd ever seen, no cutaway or nothing. I couldn't even play rhythm for him. He was just all over the thing, and he was one of the greatest jazz players I'd ever heard.

Sounds like another interesting cat.

On a side note, I wish that there were some live tapes of the Dale Hawkins band with Roy, apparently they were a blistering combo.
