I'm looking for a specific resonator sound. That sweet, silky earthy tone that you hear in lots of bluegrass songs. I bought a Johnson Style-O Brass res. and while it's a beautiful guitar, the sound is very mid-rangy and harsh when played with a slide. (biscuit resonator) I'm guessing that waht I want is a wood body, spider-bridge axe. Any helpful comments are appreciated.
Slide on!
Any suggestions as to brand and square/round neck would also help.
The guitar that I'm looking at is the Johnson JD-400-C. (good? bad??)

| I believe that you answered your own question, Andy. Someone posted on this subject last year with a real good overview of the respective characteristics of wood/metal, spider/biscuit et. al. but I recall the bottom line being that bluegrass resoguits want to be wood body. |

| Hi Andy. If you're looking for that Bluegrass Sound I'd recomend picking up a used Regal, Flinthill or Johnson squareneck (assuming you're playing lapstyle, if you're playing bottleneck, get the roundneck) Then, call Resophonic Outfitters and get a Quarterman QC-1 cone and new bridge insert. It's not a tough job installing them and the sound will be as close to a big-buck custom made resonator as you're gonna get for less than $400.00 |

C'est true. If you're doing the bluegrass thing it'll be a wood body, square neck played lap style.

This site is absolutely great. The amount of help, the comraderie, and the willingness to spend a few minutes typing and giving friendly advice gives newbies here an honest to god warm fuzzy. Like walking into a strange tavern and having the locals buy you drinks and tell you jokes. (not a frequent event when you're on the web)
