Harlem Nocturn

Hey fellow pickers,

I don't have a tab to post just an inquiry.

Does anyone have a tab or (better yet) the chord structure for Earle Hagen's classic tune called "Harlem Nocturn". This song was used as the theme song for a 50's & 60's TV show (Mike Hammer I believe). I've been looking on the internet and (the slow way) in libraries to no avail.

I'll appreciate any help on this as I've been struggling with the chords.

I hope this helps. The first Gm chords are actually G minors with a major seventh. That's why they sound so creepy.

Just after his death, Danny Gatton's full arrangement of Harlem Nocturne was published in Guitar Player Magazine. Try a periodical search at yoour local library.

I was under the impression that "Harlem Nocturne" was written for the film "Taxi Driver" by Bernard Hermann.

Maybe so but it is Earle Hagen's tune. Earle wrote the music for the Dukes of Hazzard for the last couple years of that show, and I remember him saying at one of those sessions that he had written that tune in 1940, which at that time made it 45 years old. He was amazed that it was still around and still being recorded. 45 years seemed like a long time then -- but now it's 59 years old! And it's still a cool tune.

March of 98 I'm sure you can find a copy of this from Someone.It is in the original key of Am.
I don't have the Knowledge or software to put it on the forum.

I think sax man James Moody had one of, if not the, first cuts of Harlem Nocturne and that was in the 50's. Not positive on the date, but it was definitely way before Robert DeNiro could play golf. A beautiful version of one of the classic sax tunes!
