Matchbox - '?'

Digging in my old paraphernalia-box, I came across this Goodrich Matchbox. It's as old as the hills: I can't remember where, or why, I got it and I don't recall even using it.

A couple of questions, if you'd be so kind:

First, what does it actually do? I changed the battery - mercifully, the old one wasn't at all corroded - and plugged it in. It enriched my sound enormously but it's hard to pinpoint quite how. Is it a sort of pre-amp?

Secondly: I'm aware that leaving the cords plugged in will drain the battery. Which cord must be removed to prevent this? Input or output (or both)?

Finally: the tubular plastic clip (the leg-attachment) has broken! Is this something that a hardware store would carry or is it made specifically for this gizmo?

Sorry, one more. Has this old technology been superseded now? I have had this for decades and it has only just seen the light of day.

Roger. It's a buffer and helps retain signal strength while maintaining the highs. The out cable is the on/off plug. Goodrich has the 7A now. Those clips were available on the forum store. Also ShoPro steels had them listed. Bill Ferguson is a Goodrich dealer and he probably has them.

Roger, if you open it up, either the potentiometer or one of the capacitors may have a date code on it. If so, the box was probably assembled within a few years after that. You can Google how to read those codes, depending on the pot or cap brand.

I think this was quite an early one. I definitely bought it while in England so that makes it pre-1997.

I think I remember Goodrich original location as being in Grand Haven Michigan in the early 80s. I believe they moved the operation to Ruskin Fla. in the late 80s or early 90s before moving back to Mi....if that's any help.

FWIW, I bought one of these from Jeff Newman soon as they came out late 70s or early 80s. This was before the Model 60 label but basically the same unit.

It gave me fits having it sent back to them 3 or 4 times for repair and I finally gave up on it and converted to a A/B switching box....the case has lasted well though Laughing

I have two of those. The first one I got was probably about is the age Jerry said. I also got it from Jeff Newmans advice.The later one is a different color. The older ones control came apart. The newer one still works good.

RODGER I MADE A LEG CLIP WITH A THREE QUARTER PLASTIC PIPE.YOU CUT OUT THE SIDE OF THE PIPE UNTILL IT WILL SNAP ON THE LEG.ATTACH TO MATCHBOX WITH SCREWS,WORKS GOOD.
