I'm about to re-string an 8-string Supro to G6 for a particular project. Can somebody recommend gauges for EGBDEGBD lo-to-hi? Please and thank you.

Yeh, speaking of scale lengths - I'm a fan of the telecaster
guitar. There's a few discussions about string through vs top loading Teles and how the top loaders feel slinkier. I point out the total string length is a big factor and most folks pissah my point.
That chart supports my position. |

Jim, I am with you on that. There are always debates about scale length and sustain, and most often I read claims on forums that the scale length and string gauge alone is the be-all-end-all: whatever is happening with strings behind the bridge or headstock is irrelevant.
All the components and construction factors work as a system, so the angle and length of the strings after both terminations definitely make a difference IMO.
(as you can feel with the top loader and the string through, or, on the other extreme, the same 25.5” scale length on a Jazzmaster with a much shallower break angle.)
Same goes for the harp tail pieces of archtops.
Even if such factors make relatively smaller impact on sound, the difference in feel changes how the player interfaces with the instrument. |

| Thanks for the validation Joe. I have a top loaded 22.5" scale home made lap steel I'm considering changing to through body to see if it affects the tone (which I'm not too happy with) |
