If you're gonna set it on the floor next to you Kevin, I found the Gator cases have a tendency to roll over on you. I went with the wood square bottom cases and have had no problem with them.

I like SKB. They are light weight and easy to handle. I would get a 4 space or more even if you only need say, two. I could see where a narrow case would tend to turn over. I've never had that problem with my 4 space.

Note that some models come either deep or shallow so do your homework re: what you intend to mount in it.

I've purchased a few thru Marathon Case Co.
Sturdy - but yet light in weight - with ATA recessed hardware.

Mounted the AC outlet and Speaker Outlets into the rear wall.......the "plug in and go" concept.

With the top of case removed, 19" tall is pretty good height for sitting next to your steel.

Hope that helps -

Ron

Here is something typical:

https://www.amazon.com/SKB-1SKB-R4S-Shallow-Steel-10-5-Inch/dp/B00ICT5GC8/

As Jon mentioned, typically a rack comes in deep (23") and shallow (16"). Personally, I never found a piece of equipment for which I needed a deep rack.

Again, for me personally (being a "tube guy"), I found that a 6U case can get somewhat heavy after it is loaded up. This is true especially when one starts storing a couple pedals, extension cords and other sundry stuff in the case, as well.

I like rack cases because they can simplify the organization of your sound chain in the music room / studio. Also, it can simplify moving in and out of the space at a gig.

Craigslist can be a good source of economically priced used rack cases, depending on where you live.

Individual pedals mounted on pedal boards have seemed to have become the more popular alternative... but I still like the rack case approach, complemented by a few select pedals.
