An old Dick McIntire song, starts around 8:55:
https://www.soundcloud.com/you/library

Mike Neer discovered from close listening that on this tape Dick was using a tuning with a high G#, like G# E C# G# E A# F# or thereabouts.

The top part of that F#9th is an E6th chord, and that would be the earliest instance I know of with a 6th tuning with the third of the chord on the top string.
Since Dick was such an influence on Jerry Byrd, this may be part of the genesis of the C6th tuning, which is also a 6th tuning with the third on top, of course…

Although that top 3 string minor triad (hi-to-lo) 5 b3 1 was present on the old A tuning with the C# flattened, as well as G11th (or perhaps better called Bmin11th) E C A F D B used by players like Andy Iona circa 1939?

Here is an old transcription I did 10 years ago for Night of Tropic love and the discussion. I remember it laying out well on the C6

mike adds great analysis here

You can hear in the JB live cut that McIntire was certainly THE major early influence on Byrds phrasing. I hear some 3 string minor slants in there too.
