Hello,
I am new here and am trying to identify a pedal steel that I have had for a long time. It is a black Fender 10 string, 3 pedals (with rods) and 2 knee levers.
I think it is an artist 10, but I am not sure. There is no placard on the instrument anywhere, but it does have the number 1186 engraved under the tuning machines (on the underside).
I would be curious if anyone could help me ID this.
Thanks

you say there's nothing on the steel?? How do you know it's a Fender?? ShoBud made some steels for Fender and as I recall it's a limited changer (not a profesional) more like a maverick?? |

It sounds like the Artist 10. If it's covered in black tolex, has a Fender amp logo on the front, a rod mechanism and "ashtray" tuner pan it's likely that model - not made by Fender, but by Shobud. I had the student model, which was a Maverick, basically. I'm a little curious about two knee levers, though, as I thought the Artist had four. Does it have an actual neck - not just a fingerboard on top of the basic "box"? If there's no "neck" it's a student model (Shobud Maverick) with an added knee lever, I'd bet. |

It's a student model. No neck (the artist models had necks). I had one too - they came with one lever, so it looks like someone added one. Mine had three more added. |

The picture above is of the Fender "Student Single 10", it was based off the Sho-Bud Maverick model.
The pictures below are of a Fender "Artist Single 10", based off the Sho-Bud Pro-I, and came with 2 or 4 knee levers.

Thanks! I appreciate you ID'ing for me. I was baffled and it seems to be hard to find info on it anywhere. I have carried it around for years and haven't done anything with it, so I am actually considering selling it.
Any idea what something like this is worth?

Mack - I'm confused (not unusual...hehehe). Did Duane post a pic of *your* guitar?
I've seen a few of the 3/1 models sell for around $500, but that's here in L.A., a decidely non-steel market (the closest steel stores are Jim Palenscar 80 miles south and Blackie Taylor 60 miles east!). There seem to be a few Fender "guitar collectors" who want to have one just to round out a collection - but they don't really have "collector value" and zero "player value" ( I had one years ago in my first try at steel, and it was beyond awful). The Artist seems to be a "real" steel. And whil the added kne makes the student one more playable, it kills ANY collector value.
I'd say it'd still be around $500 tops. |

Which one is it, Mack? The student model or the Artist? |

Alvin, the undercarriage of yours isn't original parts, is it? It looks like a Tom Bradshaw restoration. Really nice, by the way. |

Mack's steel is the "Student 10 model" picture that Duane posted. The picture I posted of the "Artist 10", with the Tom Bradshaw restoration,
is the one that Steve Epstein has listed in the 4 sale section of this forum.[This message was edited by Alvin Blaine on 29 July 2006 at 04:07 PM.] |

I believe I saw that guitar while Tom had it at his place. I live near Tom,andI was over one day have either a rollerut fixed on my ZB, or to drop off an MSA I had to switch a few pulls....
Tom showed me some parts from that guitar, some he had been doing the finish on, and the cabinet too. Looks nice, turned out well. Tom does a great job.

Bobby,
Duane posted the pic for me as I don't know how to do it. I have the student with an added knee lever.
It is in really nice shape....I have had it since 1984ish and just haven't played it much. A friend of mine tinkered around with it for a few months and really liked it, but didn't want to add to his already impressive collection of instruments.
I really appreciate all the information about this instrument!

I had another question about the student pedal steel I have. What would be the standard tuning for it?
